If you search online for “2-hour glucose 140,” you may find tables saying:

During an OGTT, you first fast for at least 8 hours and then drink a standardized glucose solution containing 75 grams of glucose. Blood is then drawn in a laboratory two hours later.
Your usual dinner might contain protein, fat, fiber, vegetables, and a completely different amount and type of carbohydrate.
Therefore, I would not take a home glucose of 140 mg/dL two hours after dinner and automatically label it “prediabetes” simply because 140 is also the OGTT cutoff.
The number may be identical, but the testing conditions are not. A standardized 75 g oral glucose tolerance test and a home glucose reading after an ordinary meal should not be interpreted as though they were the same test.
What If You Already Have Diabetes?
The interpretation is different if you already have diagnosed diabetes.
For many nonpregnant adults with diabetes, a commonly used glucose target is:

Fat, protein, fiber, meal size, stomach emptying, exercise, and insulin sensitivity can also affect how quickly and how high glucose rises.
This is another reason why an ordinary meal cannot be treated as though it were a standardized laboratory glucose tolerance test.
What If the Reading Was 140 One Hour After Eating?
A one-hour reading should not be interpreted the same way as a two-hour reading.
Glucose often rises during the first part of the post-meal period and then begins to fall.
If you are monitoring your glucose, record the exact timing instead of writing only “after eating.”
For example:
- Before breakfast: 98 mg/dL
- 1 hour after breakfast began: 152 mg/dL
- 2 hours after breakfast began: 121 mg/dL
That pattern tells me much more than a single isolated number.
What If Your Blood Sugar Is 140 Three Hours After Eating?
Again, the timing changes the interpretation.
A result that remains elevated several hours after a meal may deserve more attention if it occurs repeatedly, particularly when fasting glucose or HbA1c is also abnormal.
But it still should not be used alone to diagnose diabetes.
What About Fasting Blood Sugar?
Fasting plasma glucose is one of the standard laboratory tests used to identify prediabetes and diabetes.
For nonpregnant adults:

HbA1c provides a longer-term view of glucose exposure.
Unlike a post-meal meter reading, HbA1c reflects glucose exposure over approximately the previous two to three months.
For nonpregnant adults:

- 5.7%–6.4% is the prediabetes range.
- 6.5% or above is the diabetes range, generally requiring confirmation when there are no clear symptoms.

Technique can also affect the result.
